Deep Hole Drilling Cost-Per-Hole Calculator

Estimate the fully-loaded cost of one deep hole: machine time, tooling, and scrap — with a cost-per-hole breakdown you can use to compare methods or build a make-vs-buy case.

Cost Per Hole

—
Total cost per hole ($)
—
Machine cost share ($)
—
Tooling cost share ($)

Tooling share scales by method: BTA indexable inserts run fewer holes per edge; gundrills are reground many times. Adjust "holes per tool edge" to your real data.

💡 Cost model: Cost per hole = machine cost (rate × cycle/60) + tooling cost (tool cost ÷ holes per edge) + scrap cost (subtotal × scrap%). The tooling share uses your method's typical edge-life multiplier. Replace all values with your own machine, tooling, and quality data.
⚠️ The biggest hidden lever is utilization: a machine that runs 40% of the time costs 2.5× per hole vs the same machine at 100%. See Cost Per Hole Analysis for the full model and Make vs Buy for the decision framework.
