Monel & Nickel-Copper Deep Hole Drilling

Monel 400 (nickel-copper) and K-500 are the marine and chemical-service workhorses — corrosion-resistant, tough, and notoriously gummy to machine. Deep holes in Monel need low speed, positive feed and chips that never get a chance to weld to the edge.

Why Monel Drills the Way It Does

Nickel-copper alloys combine high strength with extreme toughness and a tendency to smear and work-harden. The chips are long and ductile, prone to packing in flutes; the surface work-hardens if the tool rubs; and built-up edge forms readily. Deep hole drilling Monel is a low-speed, high-positive-feed, relentless-coolant job — the recipe that works for all the nickel family.

💡 K-500 is the harder case: age-hardened K-500 is stronger (and stringier) than Monel 400. Treat K-500 like a superalloy: lower speed, stronger edge, more coolant pressure.
